A:A domain with status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD (or PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE for .info domains) has expired and was not properly renewed for at least 40 days. Domains which are not renewed are deleted, after which point the Registry will hold the domain in the REDEMPTIONPERIOD/PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE for 30 days.
OpenSRS will have no public contact information associated with this domain, since it was deleted. However, you can see its current status using a Registry-level WHOIS. (For .COM/.NET domains use: http://www.crsnic.net , for .ORG domains use http://www.pir.org, for .INFO domains use http://www.afilias.info/whois_search/)
Attempts would have been made to contact the Email addresses on the domain's registration record about the domain's expiration before it was actually expired. Having current, valid contact information is a requirement for all who register a domain name, as highlighted in the agreements when the domain was first registered. Renewal reminders and other important information are sent to these contacts, and having an invalid email address or aggressive SPAM filters in place will prevent delivery of these messages.
The Registry-imposed REDEMPTIONPERIOD/PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE lasts for 30 days, and it is still possible to recover a domain in this state. The domain can only be redeemed by the original owner of the domain listed on the WHOIS prior to the deletion. Do not contact the Reseller or OpenSRS/TUCOWS if you are not the original listed owner of the domain. If you are not the original listed owner of the domain, speak with your favorite Registration company about how to determine when a REDEMPTIONPERIOD/PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE domain will be available for registration again.
Redeeming a domain is more time consuming and complicated than if the domain was "renewed" normally during the first 40 days of expiration. The original Reseller facilitates its recovery, and so you should contact them to begin this process.
If you are unable to contact your Reseller please contact our Sales department directly at sales@opensrs.org and they will determine if your Reseller is still in business, and will help you remedy the situation.
A:Expired domains will be held at Tucows/OpenSRS for a grace period defined by the registry.
For .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us, .name, and .cc the grace period is 40 days. For .ca it is 30 days. For .tv it is 55 days. For .cn it 10 days. .uk domains are held until the 25th day of the month after they expire.
There are no grace periods for .de domains. They are deleted on the day after the expiration date.
During the grace period all associated services will cease working until the name is renewed (if and when this happens). As well, name server/DNS changes will not be possible.
If a renewal is not made by the end of the grace period the domains will sent to the registry for deletion and returned to the available pool. Deletion at the registry level can take 1 to 10 days.
Please note, .com, .net and .org registrations will enter into a "Redemption Period" state. .info registrations enter into a "Pending Delete Restorable" state. These domains will be held by the appropriate Registry for an additional 30 days. During the Redemption Period or Pending Delete Restorable state it is still possible to recover the domain name and have it renewed. For information on process please contact your Tucows Reseller directly.
A:If your domain name has gone into the Redemption Grace Period and you cannot contact your Tucows Reseller please e-mail our Sales Department at sales@opensrs.org for assistance.
Some TUCOWS resellers will allow your domain to auto-renew. This means when the domain comes up for renewal, you do not have to go through the renewal procedure manually. If you consider your domain important property (for instance if it is critical to your business), it would be a very good idea to have the domain set to auto renew. You should contact your TUCOWS reseller to discuss this possibility. If you don't know who your Tucows reseller is, please click here to contact us and we'll give you that information. Please be sure to include your domain name in the email!
If you wish, you may transfer your domain to any provider that you choose. If you don't know any providers, please see http://referrals.tucows.com. Your new reseller should be able to provide you with all the assistence you require during the transfer process.
Please make sure your Administrative Email address is current in order to confirm the transfer. If you do not have your username and password to login to http://manage.opensrs.net, then you will have to fax a form located at: http://resellers.tucows.com/adminchange to request a change of administrative email address. This process can take up to 48 hours to complete.
A:Usually you cannot transfer an expired domain from another Registrar to Tucows, as the currently Registrar will not support this. However, you should check with the current Registrar to verify that you can or cannot transfer the domain.
You can transfer an expired Tucows domain. There are two ways you can transfer:
Transfer to another Tucows Reseller You can transfer your domain to another Tucows Reseller, which can generally be accomplished in under 30 minutes. You can find another RSP at http://referrals.tucows.com . Even if their website states that expired domains cannot be transferred, they will be able to transfer your domain because they are within the same Registrar system (OpenSRS) as your old Reseller.
Transfer to another Registrar You can transfer your domain to another Registrar, however Registrar transfers take generally 3-7 days to complete.
To ensure the transfer will succeed:
1. First remove the Expiration Lock (REGISTRAR-HOLD) on the domain by contacting your old Reseller and having them Lock, and the Un-Lock your domain name. This will remove all locks, including the REGISTRAR-HOLD, and allow the domain to be transferred. note: This will also reactivate the domain, but do not assume the domain is renewed or transferred. Ensure you stay in touch with your new registration company and confirm that the domain is successfully transferred or the domain will be deleted.
2. Submit the transfer request with the Gaining Registrar. Emails will be sent to the Admin contact asking for their approval. You can verify the address using http://resellers.tucows.com/opensrs/whois/
If the admin email address is not valid, then visit http://manage.opensrs.net to have the address updated. If you do not have your login and password to access the domain name, you must use http://www.adminchange.com to have this address updated. After it's updated, you may have to resubmit the transfer request with the Gaining Registrar. Clarify this issue with the Gaining Registrar first.
A:WHOIS can be a confusing tool to use when debugging expired domains as it requires some knowledge of how the global registraion system ties together.
In general, when most types of domains (like COM, NET and ORG) expire the domain is temporarily renewed. This is temporary. This temporary renewal will be removed if the domain is not renewed or transferred, which will result in the domain going into a status known as the "REDEMPTIONPERIOD" or "Pending Delete- Restorable". It may also be deleted outright, depending on the type of domain.
With some types of domains, you can confirm that the domain is expired by taking note of the expiration month and day. If you have passed this date, and the domain is offline, it has expired.
Please note that it may take 24 hours for some types of domains to come online once they have been renewed, and WHOIS will unfortunately not indicate if it was renewed.
